Oualidia Day trip
Tour Overview
Oualidia is an oft-forgotten fishing town located on the Atlantic coastline between the historic towns of El Jadida and Safi.
Many years ago Oualidia was a popular destination of the Moroccan royal family – King Mohamed V had a summer palace on the beachfront which was the setting for many royal parties and festivities. His son King Hassan II did not share his father’s affection for Oualidia and the palace was allowed to gradually fall into disrepair.
In the summer months Oualidia fills to bursting point with local families from Marrakech who flock to the coast to escape the fierce summer heat.
Oualidia is built along the coastline and part of the town overlooks a wonderful natural sea water lagoon which is a favourite spot for bathers and for taking a small powered motor boat tour.
The wild ocean side of Oualidia is separated from the lagoon by a large sand bar and it is here that the fishermen pull up their fishing boats and where surfers brave the untamed ocean to ride its majestic waves.
The Oualidia estuary is home to a large number of bird species and migrating birds such as flamingos and egrets can be seen here during Spring and Autumn. If you should tire of the spectacular beaches, mountain bikes, canoes and fishing boats are available for rent.
Oualidia is famous for its fresh oysters, shell fish and abundant fresh seafood. One of the most delicious dishes you can eat here is the freshly caught fish that local fishermen will grill for you on the beach.
